Awful experience. My order was not ready at the pick up time. Had to wait an extra hr. The amount of food I paid for was very small compare to the price. Too expensive compare to other Caribbean restaurants. I had to go buy more food at a Trini roti shop and that food was a lot more than what I got from Pam's bakery and cheaper too. The fried rice was dry and I was very disappointed. Should have just ordered fried rice at the Chinese shop for 1/2 the price. The roti was tasty and the curry was not too bad, but very small for the $8 per roti and curry chicken meal. Well no more catering orders from this roti shop for me. I was beyond pissed off with the late preparation of the food and the very small amount of food for the price.
I was celebrating a milestone and decided to host a birthday party and I wanted a one stop shop in terms of the food and cake.
Before Pam became a commercial success, she had baked and iced a black cake, which to date, is the best I have had. To that end, I commissioned her establishment to help me accomplish my oriental themed party. I provided a picture of the cake and Pam personnally gave me a price of $125.00 for a 14"" sponge with an 8"" black on top. I then left a deposit, for 1 large pan of fried rice, 1 pan of chow-mein and 18 dhal pouri. I was handed a receipt and I specifically asked if I needed to come in days before the event to pay the balance, I was told that I would pay upon pick up. The day of the event, I arrived and to my dismay, the price of the cake went from $125.00 to $210.00. Perplexed and shocked, I was told by Ms. Pixie, Supervisor, that Pam acknowledged she told me $125.00, but to make the cake to my specifications in terms of height, they needed to add another layer. You would think someone would have called to tell me that the price changed. 210.00 was not in my budget for a cake. Needless to say, I was livid.......but calm and professional and of course, I paid the $210.00. Hey, it was a few hours before my event, I did not have much choice. Once again, the black cake was SUPERB! She really has the market share on black cake. Everyone loved the black cake....especially my friends who are not from Guyana. The sponge cake was VERY, VERY dry and not at all tasty. Oh, how could I forget, the icing on this cake was no less than 3-4 inches thick........Upon cutting the cake, all you saw was gobbs of icing.
On to the food. Upon placing the order in person and again in speaking with Ms. Pixie, Supervisor, on the phone, I specifically requested no box vegatables in either the fried rice or chow mein. I requested all fresh vegatables and I specifically cited Bora. Upon picking up the food Ms. Pixie assured me that my request was honored. While serving the food, I noted the food did have Bora, but it was in the minority. Peas, carrots and corn were the majority and these items appeared quite commercial to me and my guests as both the corn and peas got soggy. The fried rice was very, very dry, but the chowmein was not bad. Not the best, but not bad.
Several days after my event and twice since then, I attempted to reach Pam to express my complaints, but I remain unsuccessful at the time of this e-mail (3 weeks after the event).
The big question is .....Would I recommend Pam's Bakery as a one stop shop for your catering needs. In a profound way, I will say NO!. Her market share should be black cake...........that I would certainly recommend. She has it locked on that...............nothing else.
